Now I knew what the code was for that I had found in Lisa’s file. This had to be what it was for. I gave it a try. I typed in Lisa Stamford in the first box and j8F3m87KnBX!@6w2 in the second one and hit the enter key.

Nothing happened. Had I misspelled her name? No.

Was the code exactly the same as it had appeared to be in her file? Yes.

Hmm. What was the problem? I typed it all out again with no luck. I looked at the paper a third time and saw what the problem was: I hadn’t entered in Lisa’s middle name. I tried again using her full name: Lisa Ann Stamford. I hit enter again, and there it was! A whole new screen popped open with all of Lisa’s information. I skimmed it over, sorting through all the details I already knew–her date of birth, her parents’ names, and where she resided throughout her life up until they had brought her here.

There was a tab at the top of the screen called ‘Notes.’ I clicked on it and read what came up. I had to re-live certain details of that night when she had tried to kill both Jake and me, and it sent shivers down my back. I hadn’t been prepared for the way I was feeling right then. I didn’t expect it to have that effect on me after so long. It was all too real and that night was not one that I would easily forget.

Then, finally, there it was... what I had been looking for. All the way toward the bottom of the screen was a tab labeled ‘Unknown.’

Unknown? That didn’t make any sense. I clicked on it, and a whole new screen opened up. In bright, red text the word ‘INCONCLUSIVE’ stared back at me. Underneath it, a lengthy paragraph in all capital letters described what had happened to Lisa. She had been brought to Caring Hearts Juvenile Facility and spent her days there till she turned eighteen. Apparently she had tried numerous times throughout her stay to kill herself, but thankfully, had failed, for her own sake. On the day of her eighteenth birthday, they transported her to a mental institution in Greenville–a city about forty-five minutes west of Shadyside. She would have been sent to prison, but because she had attempted suicide time and time again, she had been declared mentally unstable. Therefore, they had needed to move her to the appropriate facility.

There were no further notes on Lisa in the system, but I had everything I needed to know now. I would be giving Greenville Neurology Center a little visit very soon.

I closed out the screens and put the manila folders back in their proper spot. I had to leave everything the way it was when I had walked in so that no one would suspect anything. I made my way back out of the room and headed toward the front of the building where Jake was still waiting for me.
